Open access: Make your research go further

As a researcher, you want your work to be seen, shared, and cited. Open access (OA) helps you by making your research freely available to anyone, anywhere, with no access fees.

Why open access works for you?

  • Increased citation and usage: Articles have the most impact when there are fewer obstacles to access them. Studies show open access articles are read and cited more often than articles behind a subscription paywall.
  • Greater public engagement: Content is available to those who can't access subscription content.
  • Increased interdisciplinary conversation: Open access journals that cross multiple disciplines help researchers connect more easily and provide greater visibility of their research to the research community..
  • Wider collaboration: Open access publications and data enable researchers to carry out collaborative research on a global scale.
  • Faster impact: With Creative Commons licences, researchers are empowered to build on existing research quickly.
  • Compliance with open access mandates: Open access journals comply with major funding policies internationally.

Paying for OA article processing charges (APCs) through your institution

To support authors in publishing open access (OA), Â鶹ֱ²¥ Nature partners with institutions globally to provide flexible agreements that help cover OA publication costs (known as article processing charges, or APCs). These agreements allow authors from eligible institutions to publish OA in Â鶹ֱ²¥ Nature¡¯s journals across BMC, Â鶹ֱ²¥, Discover, Palgrave Macmillan and the Nature portfolio with financial support from their institution.

Depending on the terms of the agreement, your institution may offer:

  • Full APC coverage - 100% of the APC is paid by the institution
  • A percentage discount - e.g. 10% off the list price APC
  • Fixed price coverage - e.g. up to €1,000 paid by the institution
